Greek Orthodox of Australia National Schools Event (GOANSE) 2022

Since 1998, Greek Orthodox schools across Australia have each taken a turn in hosting the Greek Orthodox of Australia National Schools Event (GOANSE).

Just when it came time for us to host the event in 2020, unfortunately, COVID hit. With the organisation and forward planning required for such a huge event and the continued uncertainty about COVID, it was decided the Australia-wide event would be delayed until 2023. After discussion with the other Melbourne based school – St Johns College, we managed to host a much-reduced event for our Melbournian counterpart, St John’s College. We were able to give students a small taste of the event and hold a sports day at Oakleigh Grammar.

The day commenced at St Anargiri Greek Orthodox Church with a service by Father George who implored students from both schools to compete with respect and love. It was a great day for all, with strong competition on the sports fields and excellent sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed. Students competed in Soccer, Table Tennis and Netball with scores as follows:

Boys Table Tennis: Oakleigh Grammar defeated St John’s College (6 – 0)

Girls Table Tennis: Oakleigh Grammar defeated St John’s College (4 – 2)

Girls Netball: Oakleigh Grammar defeated St John’s College (26 – 7)

Boys Soccer: St John’s College defeated Oakleigh Grammar (3 – 2)

Thank you to all students who participated, and to the teachers and staff for organising and supporting this great event.

We look forward to hosting the full event next year!
