Learning Enhancement Programs Designed for Students with Difficulty Learning

At Oakleigh Grammar, our Learning Enhancement team supports every child with difficulty learning by recognising their individual strengths and challenges.

Through regular assessment and careful diagnosis, our Learning Enhancement team identifies students with difficulty learning and addresses these challenges to create the best path forward.

We also recognise students who show giftedness and provide them with extension opportunities and higher-level challenges.

Our “safety net” system ensures that students with difficulty learning, particularly in numeracy and literacy, receive the extra support they need. Gifted students are given advanced opportunities to achieve mastery, not just extra work.

The Learning Enhancement team collaborates with external specialists like Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Educational Psychologists to support students with difficulty learning by planning and delivering targeted programs.

Oakleigh Grammar is proud to offer The Arrowsmith Program for students with learning deficits, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, auditory processing, and memory issues. If you believe you or your child could benefit from this program, please visit The Arrowsmith Program page.

We acknowledge that all children need to achieve at their optimum in order to remain engaged by providing:

Student Support Unit

Our Student Support Unit (SSU) provides intervention for any student whose needs are not met through everyday provisions in the classroom. It aims to give necessary support and enrichment for students identified as possibly benefiting from individualised learning programs.

The SSU coordinate support programs so that every student is treated as an individual. In the classroom, the SSU teacher or aide supports generalist teachers in recognising learning styles amongst all students. The SSU supports teachers in their understandings and approaches to individualisation in learning.

Intervention programs provided at the school include the Early Years Literacy Intervention Program, the Multi Lit Reading Program and the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment Program (for additional support and enrichment).

Enrichment and Extension

Students exhibiting strong general abilities, high levels of creative, social and emotional intelligence, and who do well on key assessment measures are identified and selected to participate in enrichment programs and services.

These programs and approaches may include: personalising the curriculum to respond to learner’s needs, individual learning plans, special ability groupings, acceleration (subject, curriculum, content or pacing), withdrawal programmes, out-of-hours programmes, mentoring, classroom enrichment and extension, curriculum differentiation through changes in pace, depth, complexity and teaching method, the provision of varied teaching strategies (de Bono, Blooms Taxonomy, Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, Higher Order Thinking) and National Competitions such as the Maths and Science Olympiads and G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenges.

Another programs includes the Wise Ones, which is a widely recognised and accredited body, dedicated to providing extension programs. Its aims are to provide further intellectual and social stimulation for the child to channel their cleverness towards more wisdom. As this service is outside the standard curriculum, the cost is passed on to participating families.
