Oakleigh Grammar Music Music

In addition to Oakleigh Grammar's extensive core music programs students may also wish to undertake private instrumental lessons, join our Choir or participate in a range of bands and ensembles.

Right from the start music is an integral part of Oakleigh Grammar’s curriculum. In the Early Learning Centre we actively encourage spontaneity and an appreciation of music as a part of life. During their Primary Years students participate in music activities as core subjects through listening, singing, playing and dancing.

As they identify individual talents and preferences, students may develop their interests in music through to the senior level. Students are encouraged to participate in performance and musical productions.

ABC Music Program

An ideal introduction to instrumental music training is through the ABC Music Program. This program overcomes the need to commit to a particular instrument, only to find that a child doesn’t really like it. The ABC program offers students the opportunity to learn an extensive range of different instruments, which are all supplied at no additional cost. Fun, 30-minute individual or group classes with our Specialist Teachers run for 16 weeks with a report given at the conclusion of the program. Children learn basic theory, rhythm skills and play games. The instrumental lessons include the following:

  • Drums and Percussion
  • Guitar
  • Ukulele
  • Piano and Keyboard
  • Flute
  • Trumpet
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone
  • Recorder
  • Voice

Contemporary Music Ensembles - Middle School

We are also excited to announce Oakleigh Grammar’s new Ensemble Music program that offers all students in Middle School to be a part of a band.

Band is designed to give students the chance to perform contemporary songs in a band situation.

The band instruments include Woodwind, Brass, Strings, Percussion and Vocalists. The group rehearse once a week, learning how to work together while learning and performing the latest hits and other popular songs from the past. The students are encouraged to learn the songs from memory so they can concentrate on the performance side of music. Students must be enrolled in this Ensemble Band Program to be part of the School Band.
