Growing Independence, Expanding Horizons

Middle School at Oakleigh Grammar is a time of transformation. From Years 6 to 9, students begin to take ownership of their learning, explore new interests and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Using the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) as a foundation, students are challenged academically while their personal growth is nurtured. The learning focus of the Middle School is a balance between explicit teaching and inquiry based, concept driven learning. The goal is to stimulate and engage students in contextual learning as they progress through the middle years of their education.

The IB Middle Years Programme

As an authorised IB World School, we deliver the MYP across Years 6–9. This internationally recognised framework encourages students to become:

  • Inquirers and thinkers: Learning is driven by curiosity, critical thinking and real-world relevance.
  • Balanced and reflective: Students explore multiple perspectives and reflect on their learning journey.
  • Caring and principled: Service learning and ethical decision-making are embedded throughout the curriculum.

The MYP also develops key Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills—such as research, collaboration, organisation and communication—that prepare students for success in Senior School and beyond.

IB Learner Profile

A major feature of the MYP is the IB Learner Profile. It describes the learning attributes or characteristics that creative, internationally minded students need to develop.

The MYP encourages our students to be knowledgeable, caring, reflective, inquirers, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, risk-takers and balanced.

At the heart of the Learner Profile is teaching students how to learn, and to take increased responsibility for their learning.

Pastoral Care & Leadership

The Middle School provides a pastoral program which explores the areas of social skills, values education, ethics, interpersonal communication, and relationship building.

Formal student leadership positions are also available at all Year levels in the Middle School through the SRC (Student Representative Council), and in Year 9 additional positions are offered such as Middle School Captains, House Captains, and Middle School Leaders with specific portfolios.

Electives

Electives are introduced in the Middle School and are designed to enhance learning and skill development. Oakleigh Grammar offers a diverse range of electives which provide students with an opportunity to gain an understanding of their own areas of interest, facilitating their VCE subject selection before entering the Senior School.
