Laying the Groundwork for Lifelong Learning

At Oakleigh Grammar’s Junior School, students develop strong academic foundations while growing in confidence, creativity, and character.

Our Prep to Year 5 program blends explicit teaching with inquiry-based learning, guided by the school HARK values of Humility, Aspiration, Respect, and Kindness, fostering curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.

Our Teaching Model

At Oakleigh Grammar, Junior School combines explicit instruction with inquiry-based learning to support every student’s growth.

The Quartet, unique to Oakleigh Grammar, guides learning through four developmental phases:

  • In the Explore Phase (ELC), children engage with the world through curiosity-driven experiences.
  • In the Engage Phase (Prep–Year 2) focuses on building strong foundations through explicit teaching of core skills.
  • In the Explain Phase (Year 3), students consolidate their learning while beginning to develop inquiry and critical thinking skills.
  • Finally, the Elaborate Phase (Years 4–5) encourages students to take ownership of their learning, exploring concepts deeply with guidance and facilitation from their teachers.

This model ensures learning is carefully scaffolded, fosters confidence and curiosity, and allows every student to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Junior School Quartet

The Junior School Quartet ensures that students receive a personalised and engaging learning experience from the very start. As they progress they continue to grow their understanding and skills in a way that feels both natural and stimulating.

As your child moves through their Junior School years, they continue to benefit from our personalised approach to learning. We focus not only on their academic progress but also on their overall wellbeing, helping them to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

The Quartet begins in the ELC, where children are encouraged to engage their curiosity and explore the environment around them.

In Prep through Year 2, we employ a teacher-directed Explicit Instruction approach. This structured framework ensures that every student masters essential literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills through clear, sequential lessons. We scaffold learning in reading, writing and mathematics so children develop confidence and competence from their very first days in Junior School.

Year 3 serves as a vital transition from foundational skills to deeper understanding. While explicit teaching remains central, we introduce inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to apply their knowledge to real-world questions. This balanced approach acts as a launchpad, equipping learners with the strategies they need to thrive in Years 4 and 5.

In Years 4 and 5, our Targeted Quartet Model shifts toward elaboration and global perspectives. Students consolidate prior competencies, engage in complex projects, and think critically about local and international issues. By building on their academic strengths and nurturing a growth mindset, we prepare them for a seamless transition into Middle School.

The Leader in Me

Leadership development begins early at Oakleigh Grammar through The Leader in Me process, inspired by Stephen R. Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.”

From Prep onwards, students cultivate self-direction, initiative and empathy, learning to set goals, solve problems and influence others positively.

As Australia’s only independent Leader in Me Lighthouse School, the highest level of accreditation possible, we guide learners to find - and use - their voice, empowering them to lead with integrity throughout their school journey and beyond.

Co-curricular Life

Junior School students are encouraged to get involved in a wide range of activities:

  • Sport: Interschool competitions, athletics, swimming and team sports
  • Performing Arts: School productions, ensembles, choir and drama club
  • Clubs: Chess & Board Games, Art Explorers, Craft, Computer Club, Lego Builders
  • Leadership Opportunities: Junior School Captains, Junior School Vice Captains, House Captains, Faith Leaders, Ambassadors for Leader in Me and Round Square, and Student Representative Council

These experiences help students discover their passions, build friendships and develop confidence.
