As part of their Greek Language and Culture studies, Year 8 Greek LOTE students from Mrs Spanos’ class recently visited the Shrine of Remembrance to experience the powerful exhibition “Spartans & ANZACs” and explore the significant historical connections between Greece and Australia.

The exhibition provided students with an opportunity to reflect on the enduring values of courage, sacrifice, service and mateship, and how these qualities have shaped stories of remembrance throughout history.

Students explored the powerful connection between the ancient Battle of Thermopylae and the ANZAC experience during World War II. Through the “Spartans & ANZACs” exhibition, they learned how the values of courage, sacrifice and service have continued to inspire generations, from the bravery of the Spartan warriors in ancient Greece to the commitment and resilience shown by Australian and New Zealand troops during the Greek Campaign of 1941.

During their visit, students also explored the Australian Hellenic Memorial, located at Burwood Avenue, which commemorates the Australian and Greek men and women who served during the Greek Campaign of World War II. The memorial recognises the strong bond forged between Australia and Greece through shared experiences of conflict, friendship and cooperation.

Through their visit to both the “Spartans & ANZACs” exhibition and the Australian Hellenic Memorial, students gathered valuable information for the annual Australian Hellenic Memorial Foundation School Competition, which encourages young people to learn about the events of World War II in Greece, honour those who served and understand the importance of preserving these stories for future generations.

The excursion allowed students to deepen their understanding of Greek and Australian history while reflecting on the shared values of courage, sacrifice and remembrance. By engaging with these significant historical sites, students developed a greater appreciation of the experiences of those who served and the enduring friendship between Greece and Australia. The visit provided students with an opportunity to connect with the past, recognise the importance of preserving history, and reflect on how the actions of individuals can continue to inspire future generations.
