Hellenic Culture

At Oakleigh Grammar, our students are continually encouraged to embrace opportunities that allow them to represent our school community at significant cultural and commemorative events organised by Greek and Hellenic organisations. These experiences provide students with meaningful connections to Hellenic culture, Orthodox traditions, and important moments in history, while developing a deeper sense of respect, pride, and appreciation for their heritage. Through active participation in these events, our students contribute to the preservation and celebration of the values and traditions that continue to shape our community.

On Saturday 9 August, selected Senior SRC members attended the annual Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Service at the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial in Lemnos Square, Albert Park. Students were accompanied by Deputy Principal Mr Dickinson and Hellenic Culture Coordinator Mrs Spanos.

The commemorative service recognises the important role the Greek island of Lemnos played in Australia’s ANZAC history, particularly during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. The ceremony pays tribute to the Australian nurses and soldiers who served on the island, the 148 Australian servicemen who remain buried there, and the Lemnian people who provided vital support and care during this significant period.

Representing Oakleigh Grammar, Year 11 SRC members Constantina Lekkas and Irene Koutsovasilis, together with Year 10 SRC member Chrisanthy Psaras, proudly laid a wreath on behalf of the Oakleigh Grammar community, honouring the courage, sacrifice, and enduring friendship between Australia and Greece.

At the conclusion of the event, the President of the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemoration Council of Victoria, Mr Lee Tarlamis MP, addressed the students and expressed his sincere gratitude for their attendance and participation in the commemoration.
