Every Learner, Every Opportunity

At Oakleigh Grammar, our Learning Enhancement team supports every child with learning differences through a strengths-based approach.

At Oakleigh Grammar, our Learning Enhancement program supports students to thrive by recognising individual strengths, addressing learning differences, and responding to the whole child. Through a strengths-based and inclusive approach, we work to ensure every student is supported to access learning, build confidence, and reach their potential.

Working in partnership with students, families, therapists, and school staff, the Learning Enhancement team develops authentic, goals-based pathways for students with learning differences. We collaborate closely with external specialists including Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Educational Psychologists to plan and deliver targeted support programs.

Our structured “safety net” system ensures that students who require additional academic support, particularly in literacy and numeracy, receive timely and appropriate intervention. A holistic, child-centred approach underpins all aspects of our work, with student wellbeing at the centre and ongoing collaboration with families, psychologists, and counsellors as needed.

The Learning Enhancement team also identifies students who demonstrate giftedness and provides opportunities for extension and higher-level challenge. Selected students are supported to achieve mastery in their areas of strength, while also developing skills in areas of relative weakness.

Oakleigh Grammar is proud to offer The Arrowsmith Program  for students with learning differences, including Specific Learning Disorder (Reading and Writing), Autism Spectrum Disorder, and ADHD, as well as students with wellbeing needs. To learn more about this program and determine whether it may benefit your child, please visit The Arrowsmith Program page.

The Learning Enhancement team works closely with the school’s Careers Counsellor to support students as they transition from secondary education into further study or the workforce.

Intervention and In-Class Support

Intervention programs ar provided for students whose needs are not fully met through everyday classroom provisions. A strong focus on literacy and numeracy supports the development of functional skills, enabling students to access learning across all subject areas.

In classrooms, Learning Assistants work alongside teachers to support engagement, focus, and access to learning. The Learning Enhancement team also supports teachers in understanding and implementing individualised learning programs, recognising the diverse needs and strengths of all students.

Enrichment and Extension

Students who demonstrate strong general abilities, high levels of creative, social, and emotional intelligence, and strong performance on key assessment measures may be identified for enrichment and extension opportunities.

Students across all areas of the school may access a range of experiences, including:

  • Acceleration opportunities (subject, curriculum, content, or pacing)
  • A personalised curriculum supported by a Learning Plan with individualised goals
  • Special ability groupings
  • Enrichment experiences such as excursions, workshops, and competitions
  • Mentoring

These opportunities are designed to challenge students, extend their thinking, and support the development of their strengths, interests, and potential across both academic and personal domains.
