Oakleigh Grammar bestowed the honour of ‘Lighthouse’ School

I am delighted to announce that Oakleigh Grammar has received the much coveted Lighthouse status for its extraordinary leadership achievement in embedding ‘The Leader in Me’ in our Junior School. Oakleigh Grammar is the first Independent School in Australia to have been awarded this recognition. There are over 3000 schools worldwide implementing this leadership framework and we join approximately 350 worldwide exemplar Lighthouse schools of leadership.

Mr. Sean Covey from FranklinCovey America has commended our School for the impact we are having on our students, staff and key community stakeholders.

The 7Habits process reflects our whole school leadership framework, underpinned by the late Dr. Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. Having implemented The Leader in Me for over 7 years and seeing the positive impact on student behaviour, outcomes, enrolments, culture, and key stakeholder support, we decided to apply for Lighthouse status for our Junior School at the beginning of 2017. All Junior School teaching staff were actively involved in the journey and contributed to our success.

‘The Leader in Me’ has provided the framework for empowerment of staff, students and parents. The 7 Habits and the underlying principles for personal and interpersonal development are aligned to the core values, culture and Orthodox Christian ethos of our School. These principles allow staff and students to take responsibility for their choices, set long and short term goals, collaborate, synergise and understand the importance of looking after their spiritual, mental, physical and emotional life. From a whole school perspective, we are absolutely clear on our three Wildly Important Goals (WIGS) of improving student outcomes, inspiring the love of learning and fostering healthy relationships.

Congratulations to the Oakleigh Grammar Junior School team.  In particular I wish to acknowledge the passion and drive of our 7Habits Facilitator – Mrs Kathy Haramis, Head of Junior School – Mrs Lauren Cummins, Head of Junior School Teaching & Learning – Mrs Sarah Caffrey and all Junior School staff both teaching and non-teaching. I wish to extend my gratitude to our School Board for supporting our Lighthouse ambition.

Receiving Lighthouse status is due recognition for the dedication of all Oakleigh Grammar staff in our pursuit to empower our students in their learning journey.

Our School will formally celebrate this milestone achievement at the commencement of the 2018 school year.
